Sketchbook 2011 ~ Theme: Story Book

library_photo.jpg
Art House Gallery Library

The Sketchbook Project Library sponsored by The Art House Gallery will house sketchbooks by artists from around the world. Visitors to the exhibit will receive library cards and be able to view the books at exhibitions around the country. The goal of the project is to create a giant collective of sketchbooks from around the globe and make it accessible to everyone. The Project was featured on CNN and the library will be touring across the country. My sketchbook this year will not be touring. Nor will it be on permanent display in New York.
Let me explain. I love creating these books. Everytime I show my daughter my book, she says "Oh mom, don't send it on tour and then to stay in NY!" Well, this year she got her way. My sketchbook theme was storybook and I wrote a story about my canary Enso and dedicated it for my new granddaughter, Aven. When my daughter saw this book, she loved it and wanted to keep the book to give to Aven when she grows up. What could I say?

Once upon a Time...

4page-four.jpg

In the Land of Zen...

5page-five.jpg

There lived a little bird.

6page-six.jpg

His name was Enso.

7page-seven.jpg

Today is his birthday.
(too much cake!)

8page-eight.jpg

For his birthday, Enso's mother gave him a Haiku.

9page-nine.jpg

Eating more cake, Enso asked his mother- "What is a Haiku?"

10page-ten.jpg

His mother replied, "It is your lesson to find out."

11page-eleven.jpg

Enso thought, "I'll ask the friends in nature".
So he flew off to find nature.

12page-twelve.jpg

Maybe the leaves know what a Haiku is.
"Mr. Leaf do you know?", asked Enso.

13page-thirteen.jpg

Mr. Leaf said, "I am sorry I can not say but I know a leaf Haiku".
"Please tell me"

Enso thought, "Well, I guess I'll go ask the trees".
And he flew off to go find the forest.

16page-sixteen.jpg

"Mr. Tree do you know what a Haiku is?", asked Enso.
Mr. Tree said, "I can not say but I know one"
"Please tell me!"

Enso kept searching.

19pagenineteen.jpg

Enso thought, "Maybe Miss Bunny knows what a Haiku is.
I'll ask her".

20pagetwenty.jpg

"Miss Bunny do you know what a Haiku is?", asked Enso.
Miss Bunny replied, "I can not say but I know one".
"Please tell me"

22pagetwenty-two.jpg

Maybe the Mountain knows, thought Enso.
I will ask.

23pagetwenty-three.jpg

Master Mountain, "Do you know what a Haiku is?"
Mountain said, "I can not say but I know One."
"Please tell me".

25pagetwenty-five.jpg

Enso thought, "I guess I'll go ask the flowers".
So he flew off to find flowers.

26pagetwenty-six.jpg

Miss Flower, "Do you know what a Haiku is?", asked Enso.
"No, but I know one", said Miss Flower.
"Please tell me".

28pagetwenty-eight.jpg

"I'll go ask the pond", thought Enso.

29pagetwenty-nine.jpg

"Ah, Master Frog! How nice to see you", said Enso.
"Hello Enso"

30pagethirty.jpg

"Do you know what a Hakiu is?", asked Enso.
"I can not say, but I know a frog Haiku".
"Please tell me".

31pagethirty-one.jpg

It is the most famous Haiku of all!
At the ancient pond-
A frog plunges into
the sound of water
~ Basho

32pagethirty-two.jpg

Ok, now Enso was getting really confused!
He flew to the Temple.

33pagethirty-three.jpg

Budda Please!
"What is a Haiku?", begged Enso.

34pagethirty-four.jpg

Buddha said, "Why Enso you already know.
Just look inside your heart".

35pagethirty-five.jpg

Enso looked deep inside his heart.
And, he thought and thought.

36pagethirty-six.jpg

I know! I know he sang......
A Haiku is Simple.
A Haiku is Beautyy.
A Haiku is Poetry.
It is the way we should lead our lives.

37pagethirty-seven.jpg

So Enso wrote his own Haiku.

38pagethirty-eight.jpg

Enso was happy!
His mother was proud!
